Mile Noel
June 2026
Location TBA
Buildings are more than the materials from which they are constructed. They are the places where we live, work, meet friends and make memories - both joyful and difficult. Over time their forms shift with changing fashions and new uses, yet something endures: the memories made within them and the affection we develop for these familiar landmarks.
Working at a small scale in the delicate medium of watercolour, Miles Noel creates gently imperfect, idealised impressions of these places - much like the way memory holds onto the warmth and character of locations that are meaningful to us. His paintings become small keepsakes that spark conversation, evoke shared memories and foster a sense of pride in the places we inhabit.
Northbridge, just north of Perth’s CBD, developed in the late 19th century as a working-class area shaped by industry, rail, and migration. Waves of immigrants - Greek, Italian, Asian, and Islamic communities—built businesses that formed its multicultural identity and distinctive architecture. Many buildings became local landmarks, each carrying its own stories for those who pass through their doors. Today, Northbridge is Perth’s main cultural and entertainment precinct, known for its diversity, food, and arts scene.
For this exhibition, Miles has created a series of 30 small watercolour paintings depicting these iconic and quirky buildings, both past and present. Working from new and old photographs, and mostly incorporating people, the paintings are little time capsules, and celebrate the evolving character of the neighbourhood. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to purchase originals and prints, extending the exhibition beyond the gallery and into the homes of the community whose stories these buildings hold.
About the Artist
Born in 1982, Miles Noel is a Perth based graphic designer, photographer and watercolour artist. ‘A Place We Call Home’ is an ongoing project exploring his fascination with stories imbued in the places we inhabit, and the power of nostalgia to evoke emotion. He has held several solo exhibitions over his 20 year career, but only in the last few years has he been practising as a watercolour artist. He currently lives on Lane St in the City of Vincent, and frequently passes by many of the landmarks he has painted. Miles also champions his local town team, Northbridge Common. He was previously the chair of the group and now is a general member, and has executed many projects that celebrate the area and it’s history. These include recently curating the‘Take 5 and Wind It On’ laneway exhibition, and the Portraits of the Past walking tours and greeting card trail.
